MDV Christmas Sing-a-long

It's that time of year again, and Christmas vacation is only hours away! That must mean that it's time for Meadow View's annual Christmas song sing-a-long in the gym!
The sing-a-long was so much fun, and it is always SO awesome getting to hear all the MDV students singing these songs together while I play the piano. I hope everyone enjoys their winter vacation, and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! :)
The fourth graders performed a few songs from their Winter Concert before the sing-a-long, and they did a really great job singing, Winter Wonderland, Let it Snow with soloists, and last but not least, dancing The Nutcracker with almost 100 colorful scarves!! :)  Here is video of the fourth grade students performing The Nutcracker dance during the assembly.

Winter Concert Rehearsal-Fourth Graders

Fourth Grade Winter Concert Rehearsals

The fourth graders are keeping very busy preparing for our Winter Concert, on Tuesday, December 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the MDV Gym. We've been practicing our music, dancing, and practicing our Orff instrument parts since October, and we can't wait for all of you to see and hear what we've been working on for our concert!

Here are a few video clips from our practice in the gym. Enjoy! :)

Winter Wonderland. I'm so happy that we were able to
capture this song on video!

Song of Peace has a lovely, but very challenging Orff instrument part to play. All fourth
graders learned and practiced this song for weeks in the music room.

The Nutcracker scarve dance! Loving this view from the top of the risers.
Thanks to Ms. Janny for taking such great videos of us practicing our music today! :)

Practice Makes Perfect on Orff Instruments

The fourth graders have been working very hard learning and practicing the challenging, Song of Peace for our upcoming Winter Concert in December. Each week students are getting better and better at playing it together as a class. Many students have gone home and downloaded an app called, Marimba that helps them to sing and play the notes of the song at home. If you've heard your student practicing on their iPod, or iPad, you will now know why! :)

This is video of the first time these students put together all 4 parts of Song of Peace.
Very good job, fourth graders!

It's all smiles in the music room after getting to play the Orff instruments
on the brand new rolling stands! :)

About 2 weeks later, much more polished, and sounding AWESOME!!

Veteran's Day Assembly

On November 11th, we celebrated Veteran's Day at Meadow View with an all-school assembly in the gym. The fourth grade students led the ceremony with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner for the school, and then leading all the younger classes with the songs, America the Beautiful, and You're a Grand Old Flag. Job well done to all the students at MDV who sang the patriotic songs so beautifully that afternoon! :)

Third Graders Show Their "Music in Motion!"

Ask your students what Music in Motion, the game is. They will know it well. Music in Motion is a game that we came up with that is a full-body movement and listening game that we play in the music room with the lights off. I play a variety of different notes on the piano. When the students hear low notes being played on the piano, they move their feet to that steady beat. When students hear high notes being played on the piano, they clap their hands to that steady beat. The challenge comes in when they hear both low and high note doing different rhythmic patterns at the same time! It really turns into a fun, and very athletic game in music class! I often say to the kids, "is this music, or is this gym class?" They usually respond by saying, "BOTH!" :)

Dancing Outside in November??

This fall has been filled with the most beautiful and warm weather that I can remember. Since the weather has been so great, I thought it would be perfect for us to go outside and dance! :) The first graders have been learning a dance called, The Chimes of Dunkirk and we went outside on November 3rd, to dance outside in the beautiful sunshine! The kids had a great time, and they kept saying, "it feels like summer out here!"
So much fun! :)

Kindergarten Plays "Five Little Pumpkins!"

The Kindergarten classes have been learning a fun song for Halloween called, Five Little Pumpkins. We learned the song first by listening to the short book. After getting the words down, we sat in five lines with 5 real pumpkins in the front of each line. As each part of the song came up, each student sitting in front of their pumpkin would sing their part as a short solo, this was a lot of fun! :) Finally, we put the song on the Orff instruments for the first time. Students learned how to play glissandi on their instruments when they sang the different numbers in the song. The kindergartners were very excited about this, because it was their first experience playing the beautiful instruments in music!

Here is a short video of Mrs. Shoemake's classes singing and playing their Orff instruments for Five Little Pumpkins. :)
Happy Halloween too!
