A Turkey Ran Away Game OUTSIDE

Yesterday, November 17th, was SUCH a beautiful day outside that I just had to take my music classes outside to enjoy the weather! We just learned the Thanksgiving song, A Turkey Ran Away, and we learned a fun circle tag game that we played with the song. Instead of staying inside we took the song and game outside, to enjoy ourselves even more! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! :-)

MDV Celebrates Veteran's Day

Last Friday was November, 11th, Veteran's Day. At Meadow View, we celebrated the day with a school-wide assembly in the gym. The 4th grade Boy Scout troop added to the assembly with their flag ceremony at the beginning and the end of the ceremony. The 4th grade students sang 2 songs, The National Anthem, and This Land is Your Land  for the school and parent audience. The entire school then sang together the songs, You're a Grand Old Flag, and America the Beautiful. Miss Delaney Cowles also added a nice touch to the ceremony by playing the song Taps on the piano with Miss Clark. All the students did a wonderful job performing and honoring our veterans.

Listening & Rhythm Reading in 3rd Grade

The 3rd graders have been learning how to read rhythms in music for the past few weeks. To make learning even more fun, we added a rhythmic poem and game to the mix. We said the poem Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater along with patting a steady beat and students came up to the front of the class to hold up rhythm cards that the class then clapped outloud together.
They next looked at a listening map for the piece of music, In the Hall of the Mountain King by the composer Edvard Grieg. We talked about the scary sounding music, and about the life of the composer Mr. Grieg.

Happy Halloween, everyone! :)

The Inside Music Project

Creative music composition is currently happening in the music classroom with the fourth grade classes! We are using a music composing website called, Music First to write our own music for our recorders for the first time with iPads. This is not only a great way to incorporate new technology into music classes, but a fun way for students to create their own music compositions themselves at school and at home. With their own usernames and passwords to access the Music First website, students are able to compose music with iPads, or small hand-held devices or even on computers. They can even hear their music played back for them after they compose.

This is exciting technology for the music room here at Meadow View, and as you can see, the students are having so much fun with it! :)

Recorder Music Compositions Video

The end of the school year is just around the corner, and the fourth graders have just finished up their Recorder Karate unit and promptly moved into creating and writing their very own music! Using the music composition software on the website Music Comp, which stands for composition, the fourth graders have learned how to compose music for the first time. They spend time during music class composing, and they are also able to go home and login to the site and compose there as well. The most exciting part of their compositions is that they are now able to read and play their very own recorder music!

Take a listen to a few of the songs that students created and played themselves on their recorders! :-)

Spring Concerts for 5K & 3rd Grades

The Meadow View Spring Music Concerts were held last week for the Kindergartners, and Third grade classes. The students and I worked so hard to learn all of our songs, dances and instrument parts for the performance. I thought everyone did such a wonderful job at the concerts, and we hope that all the parents and family members did as well! :)

Mr. Beethoven is a Cool Dude

The Second Graders thought they could make Mr. Beethoven look even cooler than he already is. He sits up on Ms. Clark's piano and watches the students in music class everyday. Now, with sunglasses he looks so cool, and he's ready for summer vacation too!! :-)

Recorder Music Composing

This week in music, the fourth graders are finishing up our Recorder Karate unit, and moving into composing music for their recorders for the first time! Students were given a paper with the music staff and asked to compose music for their recorders using the notes and rhythms that we've learned in the Recorder Karate program in music. Next week, we will be composing music digitally using the iPads and music software called NoteFlight.

MDV Music Learning Celebration

Last week, Meadow View hosted it's annual Learning Celebration. During the celebration of learning, the first grade students get to visit the music room with their parents to show them what we are currently learning in our music class. Since our Winter Concert only a few weeks ago, the students have been learning a fun, but tricky song that is accompanied on the Orff instruments. The song is The Itsy Bitsy Spider, and here is the video that I showed to everyone who visited the music room that night. It showcases all of the classes of first graders learning, and playing the song while playing the instruments at the same time.

The Itsy Bitsy Spider...enjoy! :)
